From Water Fetchers to Full-Time Students

In communities with the benefit of reliable, safe water, life was so much easier. The contrast was startling. People had time for activities that improved their lives. One day, for example, our group offered a ride to five teenagers who were on their way to school. Ordinarily they would walk for an hour and a half each day to attend high school, so they were happy with a bumpy truck ride. Each school day, they left their village at 3:30 p.m. and walked down the mountain to the next town. School was from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. After school they walked back up the mountain, often arriving at home after 11:00 p.m. We were astonished and gratified that they were so committed to their education and realized that they might not be able to attend classes at all if they were required to help obtain their family’s water.

Throughout Honduras, people were unfailingly appreciative of Water for People’s efforts and eager to do what they could to help improve their own situations. Although they have so little, they were anxious to offer any comforts they could.
